Friday Fun Fun Fun!
Flash floods could not stop hundreds of graduating seniors from partying it up at last night’s Senior Supper in the Wilder Bowl Tent.  There was the usual camaraderie, elation mixed with sadness, speeches from class representatives, food and wine, and then - at the end of the evening - a sure-to-go-viral video produced by Daniel Schloss ‘07 and members of the Oberlin Communications...

It's all happening
The Oberlin Reunion Blog is back! That’s right - tomorrow, alumni will return to campus en masse to celebrate their reunions, and I will be in the thick of it all, blogging about events and activities, and interviewing students and alumni about their fondest Oberlin memories. So stay tuned and send me your questions, comments, ideas, and feedback.  Also, the Oberlin Communications Office...

And welcome to the Alumni Association! What follows are some photo highlights of the weekend, and the Commencement procession.

Live Broadcast
If you are reading this, you probably are not in Tappan Square, watching Commencement take place. However, you can still catch it online, by clicking here. As you probably know, Julie Taymor ’74 is the Commencement speaker. Her talk yesterday (in the Science Center) was one of the hottest events this weekend - literally and figuratively. People were practically beating down the doors to West...

Reunions within a Reunion
Oberlin is, in my opinion, a perfect size school. It is large enough that you don’t know everyone in your class by name, but small enough that you recognize everyone by face - even a decade after you sat next to them in a seminar. Last night, I welcomed two of my best friends from Oberlin back to campus, and together we roamed the town, spotting familiar faces everywhere. It was a surreal,...

Hit the Ivory!
Just finished watching a screening of IVORY, a feature film produced by Charles Carre ’98, Laurence Gingold ’98 and Oscar-winning producer Gray Frederickson (The Godfather Parts I, II & III, Apocalypse Now). IVORY was inspired by Laurence’s experience as a student at Oberlin, and was filmed partly in Oberlin. The story details the lives of a group of young pianists as they confront personal...

Videos to come
If you see me wandering around campus with a (tiny) video camera, stop and say hello - you might even make it onto this blog! I’m running around campus all day, but will pause to post on-the-spot video clips when I get a chance. Stay tuned…

Films by decade
If you look through this year’s action-packed Commencement/Reunion Weekend Schedule, you’ll see lots of film screenings. So, in honor of this year’s film-centric weekend, I’m posting the top-grossing films for every Oberlin class reunioning this year. The top-grossing film for 2010 so far: Alice in Wonderland. 1949, Samson and Delilah 1950, Cinderella 1951, Quo...

A random question for alumni (and graduating seniors):  If you could go back in time and relive your college years, would you change anything about them/do anything different? Post a comment below, or email me.

The Forecast
Oberlin’s biggest weekend is almost upon us, and amidst the flurry of phone calls, the flood of last-minute questions, and the usual preparations, a lot of questions are pouring in about perhaps the most important variable of the weekend - the weather! Thankfully, it looks like we’re in for a beautiful few days - sunny, warm, and (mostly - fingers crossed) rain-free.

Throughout Commencement/Reunion Weekend, I stopped alumni walking around campus and asked them what, if any, impact the current economic crisis had on their decision to attend Reunion this year. Those interiews will be posted shortly.

My Q&A with John Scheinfeld '75, transcribed
Q: You screened The U.S. vs John Lennon at Oberlin College before, in 2008. What was that experience like? A: I’m so passionate about this film and I’m always fascinated by how people respond to it. To me, it was fun to be in a place where there are really smart people, because I know they have really smart thoughts and reactions to it. So I showed it to a student group of maybe 50 or 60 people,...
